The United Nations is fully committed to supporting the Government of Timor-Leste in coordinating a national emergency response to the worst flash flooding the country for many years.
Thousands of people have been affected by the devastating floods and landslides. This comes in the middle of a COVID19 pandemic also gripping the country all this leading to suffering, loss of lives, and livelihoods.
The floods have compounded this situation. I applaud our frontline heroes and heroines who are responding bravely to COVID19 and the devastation caused by the floods.
There is good news with the arrival of the first batch of vaccines through COVAX, the global vaccine equity mechanism. The vaccine rollout will help restart the economy, improve access to services and help people rebuild their lives.
The United Nations Country Team in Timor-Leste will continue supporting response to the floods and COVID19 pandemic. We are committed to supporting the Government to address the needs of women, children, the elderly, and those with disabilities who have suffered the most through these crises.
