Executive Board of UNFPA, UNDP, UNOPS and Statement of Timor-Leste Ambassador to United Nations

05 February 2025

The Executive Board of UNFPA, UNDP and UNOPs, held its first regular session of the year from 27 to 31 January. Here is the statement by the Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the UN - H.E. Ambassador Mr. Dionisio Babo Soares.

New York, 4 February 2025 - Timor-Leste took the floor during the meeting of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund, underlining UNICEF’s vital role in supporting the country's development and advancing child rights and sustainable development since its independence in 2002.

In light of its Country Programme Document (CPD) (2021-2025), UNICEF in Timor-Leste have worked through its strategic initiatives to enhance the well-being of children in five key areas: Health and Nutrition, Education, Child Protection, Implementing the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), and Social Policy and Advocacy. This corresponds well with Timor-Leste’s first National Action Plan for Children launched in 2018, which outlines strategies and concrete targets for improving the lives of all children.

UNICEF's contribution has been instrumental in Timor-Leste's development, directly impacting child survival, cognitive development, and future economic productivity as well as helped shape inclusive policies and promote children's rights. Timor-Leste reiterated its commitment to work closely with UNICEF as a strategic partner to address the country’s needs and achieve its development goals.
