The meeting which took place yesterday was headed by the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Roy Trivedy.
On 24 November the UN Human Rights Adviser’s Unit organized a meeting between the diplomatic community in Timor-Leste and the Provedoria for Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ), members of civil society organizations, as well as the UN country team.
The meeting took place 2 months ahead of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Timor-Leste, which will take place on 27 January 2022 at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
The UPR is a peer (State-led) review process to which all UN members States are submitted every 4 and a half years. This is the third time that Timor-Leste is undergoing the UPR, with the previous reviews taking place in 2011 and 2016.
The UPR looks at progress and challenges in the implementation by the State of its human rights obligations under international law, as well as of recommendations that were accepted by Timor-Leste in the previous UPRs.
The meeting which took place yesterday was headed by the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Roy Trivedy.
The Government of Timor-Leste, represented by the Minister of Justice Mr. Manuel Carceres da Costa, presented the summary of the report submitted by the State in October this year to the Human Rights Council for its upcoming UPR.
Also the PDHJ and several national and international human rights organizations and coalitions, as well as the UN country team, have submitted reports to the Human Rights Council expressing their assessment of the human rights situation and status of implementation of the recommendations mentioned.
All reports will be available to the public at the end of December, 4 weeks prior to the UPR of Timor-Leste at the beginning of 2022.
