Join Us at the Summit of the Future: Shaping Tomorrow Together!

Greetings from Timor-Leste,

As Resident Coordinator, I am pleased to share with you about the upcoming Summit of the Future, scheduled for 22-23 September 2024 in New York. The Summit of the Future is a pivotal gathering where world leaders will come together to forge a new international consensus. Member States, including the Government of Timor-Leste, will commit to accelerating the SDGs, financing development, and enhancing global governance through multilateralism and digital governance, shaping the world we aspire to for future generations.

I have had the privilege of briefing His Excellency President Ramos Horta and Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Benedito Freitas on the significance of this summit. His Excellency Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao will lead our delegation to this momentous event.

The United Nations in Timor-Leste is actively supporting the Government in organizing two pre-summit high-level events in Dili: a youth-led forum to gather the views and perspectives of our youth, and a high-level event to articulate Timor-Leste’s position. These events will enrich the global discussion, highlighting Timor-Leste’s unique historical lessons and its use of international law to achieve independence in 2002. They will also showcase our journey towards internal and external post-conflict reconciliation, including the establishment of the g7+ by His Excellency PM Xanana Gusmao and our current development successes.
