Timor-Leste Highlights Impact of AMR, Climate Change on Health at UN General Assembly

Timor-Leste made a strong appearance at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with a delegation from the Ministry of Health, joined by WHO Timor-Leste representative Dr Arvind Mathur, spotlighting critical global health issues.
While the 79th session of the UNGA officially began on September 10, the high-level General Debate was scheduled from September 24 to 30, centered on the theme: "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations."
During the debate, world leaders explored solutions to pressing global challenges, aiming to advance peace, security, and sustainable development across sectors.
Timor-Leste represented at the 79th Session of UNGA by Minister of Health
The delegation from the Ministry of Health, led by Minister Dr Élia A. A. dos Reis Amaral, alongside WHO Timor-Leste’s representative Dr Mathur, addressed crucial health topics like antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the impact of climate change on tuberculosis (TB) to highlighting broader health-related challenges.
Fostering an Equitable Global Response to AMR
At the high-level meeting on AMR, Minister Dr Élia A. A. dos Reis Amaral delivered a powerful speech, emphasizing the need for international cooperation to tackle this growing health threat. “A decade ago, patients with resistant infections lacked access to diagnostic microbiology, often resulting in failed treatments and death. Now, all referral hospitals offer improved microbiology services, enabling doctors to precisely target infections with the right antibiotics,” she said in her address. However, she sought global solidarity and support to strengthen “One Health” approach. Dr Elia also harped on the need for technology and knowledge transfer to pharmacies in the Global South.

Dr Mathur, WHO’s representative to Timor-Leste, joined Minister Dr Amaral in spotlighting the nation’s health achievements and its dedication to overcoming challenges. Dr Mathur emphasized how Timor-Leste’s initiatives in areas like infectious disease control and health system strengthening are making a meaningful impact. He also spoke about the ongoing challenges the country faces, calling attention to the need for sustained global support and collaboration to build a healthier Timor-Leste.
As the Timor-Leste delegation concluded their participation at the UN General Assembly, they reiterated their commitment to tackling global health issues with determination and hope. They expressed their vision for a healthier future for all, reinforced by strong global partnerships and shared goals, working towards making sustainable health a reality for present and future generations.
