UN responds by stepping up financial and technical measures in support of Government’s cash transfer programme

06 May 2020

  • The United Nations will provide financial and technical support to help implement the Government of Timor-Leste’s cash transfer programme to assist low-income households.

“A timely, speedy, and coordinated response will help to reduce the devastating socio-economic impact of COVID-19. The United Nations is pleased to provide financial assistance of USD 934,000 together with its technical support extended through the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and UN Women to assist the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion (MSSI) and related partners to implement the social protection programme that will assist families in Timor-Leste during this difficult period”, said UN Resident Coordinator Roy Trivedy

The financial and technical support that will be provided in Timor-Leste comes from the UN’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund established by the UN Secretary General. In Timor-Leste, the UN, through ILO will transfer USD 748,000 to the Government’s COVID-19 Fund specifically targeted to help implement the MSSI’s cash transfer programme. In addition, through UN Women, a further contributing USD 186,000 will be used to assist the process of monitoring and evaluation of the cash transfer programme, involving support to civil society groups, including women’s organizations and marginalized groups, and relevant government institutions. Other technical expertise and in-kind support will also be mobilized through other UN agencies in Timor-Leste to support relevant ministries involved in implementation of this very important and timely programme.
